Downtown Streetscape Project Update #8

The latest update from the Town Administrator's office:

Dear FDP Members:

Please read the Town Streetscape Project Update below.  This information will be helpful to you and your customers and clients.  Please note that the FDP will have a more detailed overview on the project at our September 3rd General Meeting.

August 18, 2015

DownTown Project Update #8

The scheduled work for the next two weeks will include completing the driveway work on Main Street as well as curbing and sidewalk completion at Pleasant Street and Beaver Street.

They will be raising the castings along Main Street, High Street and a portion of Emmons Street in anticipation of paving those streets during the last week of August. Only ¾ of Emmons Street will be paved at this point. The remainder will be completed when the Recreation Department moves into its new location and the gas service can be disconnected in the street. We anticipate that to be in Mid- September.

A short section of Summer Street will be paved as well.

Please note that Main Street from Emmons Street to School Street will be closed for 24 hours one day next week in order to install the raised sidewalk in front of Dean College. The specific day has not been determined but we will notify everyone as soon as we know.

Work will continue on finishing the sidewalks on Emmons Street and sidewalks along West Central Street. They will continue to put in the bases for the new street lights.

No permit has been issued for the work on the Bridge Deck so that work is still on hold.

If anyone has a question please feel free to reach out to the DPW Director, Brutus Cantoreggi or Town Engineer, Michael Maglio at 508-553-5500 or Jeffrey Nutting, Town Administrator at 508-520-4949.

Progressive Dinner Press Release

The Franklin Downtown Partnership would like to invite you out to dinner. Instead of choosing just one restaurant, why not go to four different eateries? You can by joining us for the inaugural Progressive Dinner on Sunday, September 27, in downtown Franklin.

Your culinary exploration will begin with appetizers at one restaurant, soup at another, an entrée at a third, and then dessert. You can choose from two different flights, with each flight featuring four downtown restaurants. Flights will be staggered to begin every half hour starting at 5:30 p.m. The evening will end on a sweet note with dessert at The Black Box while you’re entertained by Franklin School for the Performing Arts students.

Participating restaurants are Artistry Kitchen, Bamboo House, Chinese Mirch, Hang Tai, Maguro House, Making Whoopie, The Cake Bar, and The Rome Restaurant.

“We created the Progressive Dinner to remind the community that our businesses are open during the road construction project. What better way than to have people walking through downtown, enjoying local restaurants and entertainment with friends?” says event organizer Jane Curran, owner of Jane’s Frames.

Tickets are $50 per person, including tips and taxes. Beverages are not included. Choose your flight when you purchase tickets, which are on sale now through September 15 at Jane’s Frames, The Franklin Downtown Partnership office, and Emma’s Quilt Cupboard. Cash or check only.

Full menu and flight details will be available when you purchase tickets, and on the Downtown Partnership’s website, www.franklindowntownpartnership.org., and Facebook page.

Thank you to NHS Print, Pour Richard’s Wine & Spirits, Simon’s Furniture and The Mac Deli for sponsoring this event. Sponsorships are still available. Please contact FDP event co-chairperson Jane Curran at janeframe@verizon.net for information or with questions.

Spilka Announces Restored Funding for Downtown, MA Projects

A message from Senator Karen Spilka - Great news for the Town of Franklin and the downtown!

Dear Franklin Town Officials,
I am pleased to announce that the Massachusetts legislature restored funding to critical local and statewide programs by overriding the Governor’s budget vetoes to the fiscal year 2016 budget.

Funding was restored for the following initiatives:

·         $50,000 for a NEW initiative for substance abuse coalition in Franklin.
·         $60,000 for school zone safety improvements.
·         $50,000 for a NEW initiative to construct a statue of Horace Mann.
·         Fully funds the Regional Transit Authorities at $82 Million ($2 Million increase from FY 2015).
·         $9 Million in local state aid for libraries ($55,000 increase over FY 2015) to directly provide aid and support to local library initiatives. These funds will allow local libraries to increase technology resources, educational resources, as well as retain crucial staff levels.
·         $9.9 Million for Regional Library aid ($29,000 increase over FY 2015) to help to fund the interlibrary loan system in the Commonwealth for increased sharing of resources.
·         Includes $18 Million for Kindergarten Expansion Grants which help to support and maintain full-day kindergarten programs.
·         $14.2 Million for Massachusetts Cultural Council ($2.4 Million over the FY 2015 post-9c amount). This is the highest it has been funded since FY 2002.
·         $14.6 Million for Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism which is $300,000 over FY 2015 post-9C amount.
·         Maintains existing funding for DCR State Park Operations, ensuring the same high level of service in FY 2016 as in FY 2015 and keep the same 143 parks open this year as were open last year.
·         $100,000 to establish the 495/MetroWest Suburban Edge Community Commission to study development challenges being experienced by suburban communities.

As always, if you have any questions or would like additional information, please call Puja Mehta in my office at (617) 722-1640. I look forward to continuing to work with you to make Franklin stronger.
Best,
Karen

Downtown Road Milling Operations Set for Tuesday, Wednesday

A message from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation

UPDATE on Downtown Road Project:

We will be milling sections of Main St tomorrow (Tuesday, August 4). The sections include from Lincoln St just past Church St, Main St from School to Emmons St, and if time permits, a section of Emmons St (up to the roadway widening area just short of the intersection).

Wednesday night (August 5) we will be milling the intersection of Beaver/Pleasant and Main St so as not to adversely effect traffic during the day (starting after 7 pm). If we do not get to Emmons St Tuesday, we will finish that Wednesday night.

Thank You,
Anthony Tavalone
